Position Details:

The Ph.D. Program in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences (SLHS) at the Graduate Center engages in state-of-the-art research spanning a wide range of experimental methods across six dynamic research laboratories. The program includes faculty and students from diverse backgrounds and expertise (for more information visit http://www.gc.cuny.edu/SLHSciences). The Program utilizes various techniques including sound recording and presentation, eye tracking, electroencephalography (EEG), ultrasound, and other computer-based measures.
The SLHS Program seeks a Lab Technician to assist faculty members and students in operating, maintaining and purchasing hardware and software unique to the experimental work conducted in its research laboratories. Reporting to the Executive Officer, this individual also provides support services to lecture, laboratory, or other instructional activities.
In addition to the duties in the CUNY Title Overview, duties are as follows:
– Works directly with faculty and students to assist them with their equipment, hardware, and software needs.
– Maintains, troubleshoots, and calibrates equipment, instruments, and tools, including computers, electronic and mechanical equipment, and automated systems; ensures that all equipment, instruments, tools, and machines are in safe and operational condition;
– Checks tools and equipment in and out to students; monitors, receives, stores, and maintains adequate inventory levels of tools, instruments, software, and equipment.
– Provides instructional support services for the assigned program; assists in instructional demonstrations of procedures and techniques; explains related principles, practices, procedures, methods, materials, terminology, tools, software, machinery, and equipment.
– Maintains accurate logs, reports, and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.
– Determines price and availability of parts and supplies from vendors and prepares requisitions; orders supplies, tools, and equipment as needed; maintains records of purchases.
– Trains and provides work direction and guidance to assigned student workers and staff; ensures student and staff understanding of safety practices and procedures.
– Learns and applies emerging technologies, to perform duties in an efficient, organized, and timely manner.
– Facilitates web-based experimental design and participant recruitment.
– Performs other duties as assigned.
CUNY Title Overview:
– Assists in the administration of College research programs.
– Organizes and manages the requirements of existing funded projects and prepares preliminary materials for grant submission
– Collects information for, and assists in preparing reports, manuscripts for publication, newsletters, web sites, and other communications
– Plans, designs and coordinates interdisciplinary information and research planning sessions and professional development activities for faculty and staff
– May oversee one or more facilities, participating in budgeting, planning, and monitoring, and assuring availability of needed tools and equipment
– Serves as a consultant and resource to faculty and staff on planning and administering research projects
– Performs related activities as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree and four years’ related experience required.
A preferred candidate should have:
– Bachelor’s degree in computer technology, applied engineering, engineering technology, or related fields (e.g., sound or music technology or any other field that provides the bases for the described duties).
– Technical, electronic, and programming expertise.
– Proficiency in hardware and software maintenance.
– Proficiency in computer software such as Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook; Adobe Acrobat.
– Experience with or ability to learn sound editing software, including signal processing, experiment control, and web-design software.
