Connected Cults: Symeon the Elder and Symeon the Younger in Late Antiquity

This presentation explores connections between Antonius’ Life of Symeon the Stylite the Elder (d. 459 CE) and the anonymous Life of Symeon the Stylite the Younger (d. 592). By examining these two cults from the perspective of collaboration rather than competition, this paper illuminates the multifaceted symbolic world of devotion to saints. It also offers insight how cult-keepers looked beyond localized traditions to construct a trans-regional pilgrimage experience for clientele.

FRIDAY, MAY 19, 2017, 7:00 PM:

Dr. Brad Hostetler, Jane and Morgan Whitney Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Medieval Art and the Cloisters, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
