Deadline Feb 23. | Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Program

The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Program (DDRA) funds individual dissertation level doctoral students to conduct research in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of 6 to 12 months. This program is sponsored by the U. S. Department of Education (ED) and is not related to the IIE Fulbright program, which is run by the State Department. The Fulbright-Hays DDRA Program is for students who intend to conduct dissertation research outside of the United States, excluding the countries of Western Europe, and is of particular interest to students in the social sciences and humanities.

The ED published the application for the FY 2017 Fulbright-Hays competition on January 13, and its application is available on the ED website via the following URL: http://www2.ed.gov/programs/iegpsddrap/applicant.html

Please note that because Fulbright-Hays awards are granted to students through their educational institutions, all applications must be vetted by the Graduate Center’s Provost Office prior to being submitted electronically to the Department of Education.

Given the timing and duration of the current application period, the Graduate Center’s internal deadline will be Thursday, February 23, 2017, 4:00 p.m. in order to allow for proper review and vetting of applications prior to the ED’s transmittal deadline of Tuesday, March 14 2017. No extensions to this deadline will be possible.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Grant Management System, G5, will be unavailable to all users from 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2017 until 6:00 a.m. on February 27, 2017 to allow for system maintenance. The Graduate Center’s internal deadline is set to take these days into account.

Please note that a Human Subjects exempt/non-exempt narrative must be submitted as part of the application.  The instructions regarding Human Subjects Research are located in the Instructions for ED Supplemental Information for SF 424 (http://www2.ed.gov/programs/iegpsddrap/2016-022.pdf).

If you have any questions about or are interested in beginning the application process, kindly contact Rachel Sponzo at rsponzo@gc.cuny.edu. Please do not contact U. S. Department of Education personnel directly.
