Oct 21 | “A History of Medieval Falconry in the 21st Century” (online)

Thursday, October 21, 6:30pm

Featured speaker: Professor Anna Akasoy

Falconry often appears as iconic of the premodern world with its arcane social structures and where people did not yet hunt with guns. But falconry is a living tradition across the world and defines the cultural heritage of several regions. This talk will present a public history and cultural heritage project concerned with the preservation of Arabic manuscripts which contain premodern handbooks on falconry. One of the project’s key challenges is how to address diverse constituencies of practitioners, illustrating both continuities and changes, while making the history of falconry also appear less obscure and more relevant to outsiders.
