Dear Medieval Studies: Renegotiating the Citational Network (A Roundtable) – ICMS 2022 Kalamazoo, online
Deadline for submissions: Wednesday, September 15, 2021
In Dear Science and Other Stories, Katherine McKittrick asks, “What if citations are suggestions for living differently?” (McKittrick 19). McKittrick’s work, drawing on Sylvia Wynter, demonstrates the social investment of disciplinary citational networks in colonialist-imperialist, capitalist, heteropatriarchalizing, and racist logics. If we are to dismantle these logics and their effects in Medieval Studies, we must first renegotiate our citational networks.
For “Dear Medieval Studies: Renegotiating the Citational Network,” we welcome submissions featuring non-“traditional” citational practices in any subdiscipline of Medieval Studies on any topic. We are particularly interested in work which incorporates a wide range of interdisciplinary methodologies and citational practices. Methodologies and citations may include those drawn from Black studies, Indigenous studies, diaspora studies, queer studies, gender studies, the social sciences (including psychology, sociology, economics, and other social sciences), STEM disciplines, as well as other approaches from the humanities which are not “traditionally” associated with Medieval Studies.
Please submit an abstract of 200-300 words to the ICMS 2022 Confex page (https://icms.confex.com/icms/2022am/round/papers/index.cgi?sessionid=2173 [icms.confex.com]) by Wednesday, September 15.
