Workshop: “Data Analysis with R” Thursday, February 8th, 2018 – 6:30-8:30pm

R has become an indispensable tool for academics in a range of disciplines for analyzing data. Many users come to it though with limited programming experience which can often lead to many more headaches than anyone should reasonably suffer. This workshop attempts to make R a bit less painful. Fortunately the past few years have seen a flowering of open source packages that have tried to do just that. We will learn about some of these packages and how they can be incorporated into our projects. Though this workshop does not require you already know R, it makes more sense for those who have already begun using it or are considering using it for a future project. (Co-sponsored with NYC DHWeek).

This workshop will be hosted by GC Digital Fellows Tahir Butt and Hannah Aizenman.

Workshop: “Python 201” Thursday, February 15th, 2018 – 6:30-8:30pm

Once you’ve learned to use basic Python syntax and programming concepts, what next? This workshop will address intermediate programming concepts that become critical as one moves from writing short scripts to more sophisticated programs. Topics will include programming paradigms such as functional and object-oriented programming, how to manage virtual environments, and structuring and sharing projects that use multiple files.

This workshop will be hosted by GC Digital Fellow Patrick Smyth.

Workshop: “Digital Identity and WordPress” Wednesday, February 21st, 2017 – 6:30-8:30pm

The purpose of this workshop is to help you establish a digital academic identity while becoming familiar with the WordPress platform. We will focus on utilizing the CUNY Academic Commons, helping you establish your digital CV, a blog, or both. We will focus on organization and design, including theme editing, managing content, custom menus and image use. We recommend that attendees come prepared with their CV (digital format preferred) and / or a blog idea or sample blog post. If you are not already a member of the CUNY Academic Commons, we recommend that you sign up before the workshop.

This workshop will be hosted by GC Digital Fellow Kristen Hackett.

Talk: “Field-Recording: Beyond Your Ears” Tuesday, February 27th, 2018 – 6:30-8:30pm

In this talk, Zach Poff – New York area media artist, educator, and maker-of-things – will introduce “expanded” recording techniques using D.I.Y transducers to reveal hidden sounds, sonify non-acoustic phenomena, and challenge the assumption of the human listening subject recording “in the field.” We will explore contact mics (which respond to the vibrations of objects), binaural mics (for 3D audio), hydrophones (for underwater listening), synesthetic light-to-sound conversion, VLF radio, and ultrasound. We will listen to examples of sound art, music, and installation works where expanded recordings provoke conversations about subject-hood and “post-human” listening, taking into consideration how the work is diffused into space (via traditional and specialized speaker designs, soundwalks, broadcasting, live-streaming, etc). These techniques are quite accessible for those with more curiosity than money, so he’ll share his resources to help you build transducers for your own work. Bring a sound recorder if you would like to probe CUNY GC’s hidden soundfields. This workshop is part of the GCDI Sound Series #GCDIsound.

This workshop will be hosted by Zach Poff.

About the Workshops and the GC Digital Fellows Program:

Part of GC Digital Initiatives and based in the GC Digital Scholarship Lab, the GC Digital Fellows Program operates as an in-house think-and-do tank for digital projects, connecting Fellows to digital initiatives throughout The Graduate Center. Digital Fellows utilize a team-based approach as they explore creative solutions for projects that can be implemented in a collaborative fashion. In the process, the Program helps build out “The Digital GC” — a vision of the Graduate Center that incorporates technology into its core research and teaching missions.
