As a graduate student or postdoctoral scholar, you have a knowledge base and skill set that makes you an attractive candidate to prospective employers in industry, government, and nonprofit sectors. In this seminar, you will learn how to inventory your transferable skills and market yourself to prospective employers. We’ll show you:

  • The similarities and differences between the academic and postacademic job markets
  • Top applied career fields for graduates of STEM, social science and humanities programs, as applicable to the audience
  • The transferable skills and leadership competencies you need to compete for jobs in both academic and applied careers
  • The job application materials and online presentation you need to apply for jobs and to stand out in a competitive marketplace

These strategies will help you understand your career options and translate your skills, content knowledge, and interests into job opportunities in diverse careers. This session also encourages you to adopt a proactive approach to career planning, so the job search is less overwhelming and more manageable.

Dr. Fatimah Williams Castro is a speaker and career coach whose professional development guidance for graduate students and PhDs has been featured in Scientific American, University Affairs, Rutgers Today, and numerous podcasts and radio programs. She is author of the new book Be Bold: Launch Your Job Search or Career Change with Confidence, and is a featured columnist at The Chronicle of Higher Education. She holds a doctorate in Cultural Anthropology from Rutgers University and bachelor’s degrees in Foreign Affairs and African American Studies from the University of Virginia.
